Veteran playback singer S. Janaki, fondly known as the “Nightingale of South India,” passed away on Saturday at the age of 88 in Mysuru, Karnataka, following age-related health complications. With a career spanning more than six decades, she became one of India’s most celebrated playback singers, recording thousands of songs across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and several other languages. Her death marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Indian film music.
Making her playback debut in the late 1950s, Janaki worked with some of the biggest composers in Indian cinema, including K. V. Mahadevan, Ilaiyaraaja, M. M. Keeravani and A. R. Rahman. She also shared an iconic musical partnership with S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, delivering numerous timeless hits. Her immense contribution to Indian music earned her four National Film Awards and several state honours. She was also conferred the Padma Bhushan, which she famously declined, saying the recognition had come too late.
